Mission, Vision and Values
The mission of the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) is to be a diverse
teaching and learning community that creates, discovers, and
applies knowledge to improve the health and well-being of Colorado
and the world. Anschutz Medical Campus is focused on educating
upcoming medical professionals, conducting groundbreaking research,
practicing innovative approaches to health care delivery and
providing excellent direct patient care at two hospitals. Located
on AMC, the School of Medicine hosts a globally recognized array of
departments, institutes and centers dedicated to educating the next
generation of medical professionals.
Among these is the Department of Family Medicine (DFM) which is
dedicated to "helping people be healthier" by educating, nurturing,
fostering, and enhancing those in the field of family medicine and
the communities we live in and serve. The Department of Family
Medicine has five (5) focus areas, each with specific
goals:
Rural Program Information
The Rural Program was founded in 2005 as an elective track and has
grown to become a core Program of the University of Colorado School
of Medicine in 2021. It was founded with the goal of identifying
students interested in rural practice and providing them with
mentorship, additional knowledge, broad skills and rural
socialization experiences to inform and encourage their interest in
future rural practice. Students apply to the Rural Program as part
of their secondary application to the CU School of Medicine, and
are interviewed by Rural Program faculty and, if accepted for
admission, are invited to join the Rural Program if they have
genuine interest in rural life and work and agree to spend their
core clinical year at a rural site. Approximately 10% of each
medical school class of 184 is enrolled in the Rural Program. The
CU SOM Rural Program is one of about 30 such programs in the U.S.
and is recognized as a national leader.
Beginning in 2021, the CU School of Medicine is launching a major
curriculum revision that shifts all core clinical experience into
the second year and places every student in a longitudinal
integrated clerkship (LIC). Students in the Rural Program serve
their LIC in a rural site to which they move for the year. The
Rural Program team is responsible for establishing those rural LIC
sites, developing the clinical faculty in those sites and
monitoring student progress and evaluating results.
In addition to the core clinical year LIC, the Rural Program team
presents a weekly session of seminars and workshops to Rural
Program students and provides ongoing mentoring, advising and
programming in the first, third and fourth years
The Rural Program team currently consists of three physicians, a
manager and two staff. The position described herein is new and is
being established to fulfill the Rural Program's increased
responsibility for establishing and supporting rural longitudinal
integrated clerkship (LIC) sites and direct student teaching.
Students who have graduated from the Rural Track in the past 16
years enter Family Medicine residency programs at about 5 times the
rate as other CU School of Medicine graduates. About 40% of our
graduates practice in rural communities in multiple specialties
across Colorado and the U.S.
Job Summary:
The clinician (MD or DO) in this position will be a faculty member
of the Rural Program at the University of Colorado School of
Medicine. Major activities include teaching medical students and
supporting rural longitudinal integrated clerkships.
Most duties will be at the Anschutz medical campus with some rural
travel.
Position Duties:
This position may be full- or part- time based on applicant
preference and program needs. The time allocations shown may be
modified accordingly.
0 - 50% Clinical Care/Precepting
Provide clinical care and/or instruction to residents and students.
The specific activities will be determined based on the skills and
interests of the faculty member as well as Departmental needs, and
may include:
Clinical work at a family medicine practice in Colorado contracted
with the DFM
Clinical work at an affiliated Community Health Center contracted
with DFM (Denver Health, etc.).
Locum tenens work at rural Colorado sites under contract from the
DFM.
20 - 30 % Rural Program Curriculum and Student Relations
Work with the Rural Program faculty and staff on all aspects of
planning, development and implementation of Rural Program
curriculum including direct teaching/facilitation of lectures,
hands-on workshops, TBLs, etc.
Work with Rural Program faculty and staff to develop new electives
and rural-focused opportunities post-clerkship year.
15% - 20% Student Relations
Develop formal mentoring relationships with Rural Program
students.
Assist in identifying research opportunities/projects for Rural
Program students.
Assist in career development for medical students interested in
pursuing a career in rural Family Medicine.
Participate with the Rural Program team in reviewing and recruiting
applicants
Other duties as assigned
15% - 30% Rural LIC site development, preceptor recruitment, and
relationship management
Work in partnership with Rural Program faculty and staff to develop
and support rural clinical teaching sites and preceptors
Participate in virtual and in-person site visits.
Supervision Received
The Rural Program/LIC faculty reports to the Rural Program
Director.
Supervision Exercised
The Rural Program/LIC faculty may provide direction to UME
Staff.
Salary and Benefits:
Senior Instructor: The hiring range for this position has been
established at $195,000 - $220,000/year.
Assistant Professor: The hiring range for this position has been
established at $195,000 - $220,000/year.
Associate Professor: The hiring range for this position has been
established at $201,000 - $230,000/year.
Professor: The hiring range for this position has been established
at $206,000 - $240,000/year.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set
based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to,
internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the
University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of
possible compensation at the time of posting.

particularly rural Colorado.

advocate and role model for students interested in rural life and
work.
Experience or interest in educational research and faculty
development.
Experience with the use of education technology.
Experience with curriculum development in medical education.
Program evaluation experience.
Interest in part-time rural clinical assignments to fulfill the
clinical portion of the job.

members of the School of Medicine Admissions and Longitudinal

Colorado Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP), the Colorado Rural
Health Center and the National Rural Health Association.
Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the
age of the patients served; the ability to assess data reflective
of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information
needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their
age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in
the practice's policies and procedures.
